i have a farmall 200. it is 6v. the 6v battery is shot. can i put a resistor on the coil and then add a 12v battery? how do i wire this?

remember that lights are 6 v. when you convert, you will shoot the bulbs, if you forget and turn them on.

also , you will need to change generator, to 12 v

No wiring needs to be changed, but the gen will just barely do any charging at all and would need a positive ground 12v voltage regulator. It can overheat the gen field windings, and will not keep up with lights or Idling. Work tractors need real charging systems. These tractors easily start on 6v, so the least expensive is to put in a new battery. 12v with an alternator is best and cheaper than buying a quality 12v regulator. Using a Hitachi alt is easiest, or a Delco 10SI alt. Both pretty cheap and usually with a lifetime warranty. Going to a 12v generator is OK but requires more money than any other option. decide and we can talk you through the install. Jim

There are many mount systems shown in the archives.
Some are on larger series tractors, but they are similar in that the belt alignment is key. The wiring diagram and installation pics are for a different tractor, but essentially the same. Hitachi 14231 is the #.
The Hitachi is seriously easier to fit. The Use of 1/4" female insulated spade terminals works on the connections. The S terminal connects directly to the big terminal with a short wire, 14 gauge is OK. the L terminal connects to the ignition through a marker lamp (not LED style)or a 10 ohm 5 watt resistor, or a 3 amp diode with the band toward the alternator. It should get power from the ignition switch, full bat voltage. The big terminal attaches to the amp meter using 10 gauge wire. (reverse the leads on the amp meter, hook the battery up negative ground, and replace the light bulbs.) I like to put a 40 amp fuse, or fuse link, in the wire going to the Battery from the amp gauge to protect things if connections are made wrong when jumping, or the alt fails. Jim

i just converted my sc over to 12v made my own alt. brackets changed to a 12v alt, 12v coil and added a mopar style restor on the hot wire to the coil. had to install a warning light for the alt made that bracket too

check out bob m's wiring diagrams

I would install one of NAPA's 12 coils P/N IC14.
No resistor is needed. Don't forget to change the lights and wire - neg coil terminal to your points. Hal
PS: You need battery neg grounded.

You are way better off using the 6 volt coil and resistor and the by-pass circuit for starting. The 2oo should be good on 6 volts anyway.
