with it plumbed like the photo it heats great but how much does it affect the temp sensor in the winter with the heat on and in the summer with the valve in the cab closed? it seems to read cooler than the engine is actually running, but how much?

Really hard to say for sure but it will definitely read cooler than actual engine temperature. I don't know if there is a flat on the head of that engine, but I used to drill a hole in head of some engines to add heater so temp gauge would still go in original place.

That picture is one of my tractors, and one of three plumbed that way. The temperature sensor tip actually reaches almost into the flow of coolant so theoretically it should not be affected much - it comes to right where the "T" intersects. In reality I would guess it reads maybe 20 degrees cooler than it used to based on how it used to read and how it reads now.
