1486 T/A shifts goofy

I just bought myself a 1486, decent tractor, mostly original. I had it out for a ride yesterday and went to downshift the torque. I shifted it quickly liked I've always been told to do. for an instant there was nothing, then a clickety clunk kinda noise (sounded like a 2 speed rear end engaging) then the tractor took off in low torque as normal. I tried it again about 5 minutes later, same thing. The shift happens, its just a bit slow and makes that noise. Once in low t/a, I pressed to brakes to see if it would slip, it did not slip a bit. It was about 15 degrees out that day, so a bit cold, but the tractor had been running for about 10 minutes before I moved it at all.

I'm hoping that the T/A is not checking out. Is there an adjustment that may help get a better downshift? Shifting up seems normal. The hydraulic fluid looks like it has been changed recently.

They use hydraulic lockup for "down shift" It is not a speed reducer, and if going easy with no load, (especially in higher ground speeds) should remain where it is, in or out of TA. Jim

The Little handle on the left of the steering wheel is NOT A JAKE BRAKE , and the fastest way of taking one OUT is to use it as such . The T/A stands for Torque AMPLIFIER NOT SPEED REDUCER . To be used when needing a wee bit more to get thru a tough spot or to use at the end of the field while still UNDER LOAD to reduce ground speed but to keep the RPM's up for a little faster Hyd response. Ay want to use it to slow down first ya want to use the TWO pedal's down by your right foot FIRST and while braking then you may pull the short stick back.

Might be a worn sprag clutch, but there is also a chance the tractor has been fitted with a late model "mechanical diode" TA that uses a mechanical diode in place of the sprag clutch. That may chatter a bit before the speeds match up and the MD locks.
Same as the others, do not downshift the TA to slow down if in the highest gears, very damaging to the TA.
