Farmall 656

Hi, I have a Diesel Farmall 656 that has an S stamped into the serial number plate. Does anyone know what the reason for this is. This iis my grandpa's 656, and it has white fenders, which is I also thought was strange. My grandpa ordered the 656 brand new from the local dealership and was given the decision of red or white fenders when he while he was ordering the tractor. Has anyone ever heard of an option like this, or is this likely some extra 1206 fenders.

Thanks for the help.

You're probably right on the white fenders. The dealer probably had some fenders pulled off a 1206 sitting in a back building, and a 656 with no fenders already on the lot. When your grandfather "ordered" the tractor, they just took the tractor off the lot, slapped the on-hand fenders on it, and pretended it just came from the factory.

Odds are the farmer that bought the 1206 with a cab, and unknowingly paid for the fenders that were removed. The money the dealer got by re-selling the fenders to your grandfather was pure profit.

I know of at least one dealer that played games like this. Even if they itemized a credit on the invoice for fender delete, they still had the price of the fenders buried in the price you paid for the tractor. In other words, they'd knock let's say $500 off for the fenders, but then they'd be $500 less flexible on the final deal. Then they'd sell the fenders at full retail to someone else.
