i have a farmall 340 gas and after its been run and has warmed up it still only has 70-75 psi in each cylinder. should i rebuild it? i just rebuilt the head and while i had it off i took a look at the pistons and they were pretty loose. it has no power at all. i can kill it in first gear almost.

Yep,compresson is pretty low. An OH is needed. Does
it smoke/burn oil? With that low comp and a new
head, the increased 'pressures' may now cause
excessive oil consumption.

If there is way incorrect timing, and or valve timing is off a tooth, or the carb is dumping fuel in wildly, it could act like that. I believe (though you show poor compression) that it should run way better than it does. A worn engine can make fair power. A worn engine can run smooth. I would set the valve adjustment. then check the timing and distributor shaft wear. If all else seems perfect then I condemn the compression. What is the history of the issue. Jim

Not an expert, I have several parts tractors and
when I get stumped and am not sure of the cause of a
problem I swap part off of a tractor that does run
correctly , what I am saying if you have doubt ask
if anyone is close and willing to help , loan a part
or an ear , I live in louisiana , others maybe
closer . If you get your 340 running like New it
will almost plow with a 460 , light on the front but
an enormous heart , it is less horse power than the
460 , but really shocked me .

its been doing this since i bought it. the previous owner had it and he did everything too it and it still won't run correctly. everything should be set correctly. i have messed with the carb and timing with no change in power. when you try to rev it up fast it stutters and pings severely. i think its just worn out. i could stick a pencil led in between the piston and the sleeve.

Tear into the distributor. make sure it has good springs and free weights in the advance mechanism under the breaker points mounting plate the bushing on the breaker shaft can have near zero play .001 is a lot!. It is the next place to look!! A working distributor from a similar IH tractor would also prove the issue. Jim
