Ih 1086 troubleshooting

Got my 656 fixed up thanks for the advice. Now onto my 1086. My first thing I want to fix is the dash. My voltmeter works, fuel does not but I'm not worried about it. The ones I want fixed is the oil and coolant gauges. How can I tell if it is the gauge or the sending unit? The oil gauge moves sometimes. The coolant one every once in a while. Thanks!

Remove the wire from the sender unit and turn on the switch. The gauge should move all the way to one side. Then ground the wire at the sender. The gauge should move all the way in the other direction.

I have a 656 and the wiring is a mess as in lots
of stuff disconnected. Qwen will this method work
on most gauges?

On electric gauges, other than am ammeter, yes. On a 656 that is limited to the fuel gauge. If you have a diesel do not short out the lead coming from the glow plug meter. It is basically an ammeter.
