am thinking of buying a 886 tractor. it is 1979 and in above average condition. has 5000 hrs. it has the german engine.guy told me he put an engine from a combine in it cause he has a wristpin failure.
ok, was there 2 engines for these tractors, the german and us made ones? what cid are these engines? which one is the better of the two? also fuel economy? anything to look for on these tractors? or is the 986 a better way to go? thanks.

The German is the D358. The American is the D360.

Which is better is a matter of opinion. Neither are bad engines. Each is slightly better than the other in certain respects. D358 is better on fuel. D360 is a better lugger. For example.

AFAIK, the D360 in the 886 is kinda rare. Most seem to have D358's.

They're not going to pull like a 1086, but if a solid 90HP tractor will do what you need, it's a good choice.

986's have the D436 so they're REAL good luggers. I wouldn't turn my nose up at one of those either. An advantage there is you get 38" tires usually, for a bit more underbelly clearance. 886's usually have 34"s.

I tried to be the first poster but my network timed out. Anyways, in addition to what was said the 986 delivers approximately 105 PTO HP with very reasonable fuel consumption. If power is the priority then go with the 986. If it is completely a matter of fuel conservation without maximum horsepower output then go with the 886. Having run both I would say for heavy work you will be much happier with the 986. The 886 is not like the 806 or 856 in terms of torque. Kind of like a JD 4030 is not like a 4020.

What are you going to do with it , that makes a lot of difference in what tractor is best for your job.

time to upgrade from my 660's as thats what i have been using so far on one quarter. i have the machinery and dont feel like getting bigger to match the tractor so i thiought an 886 would be good for now with 14 ft stuff. and also for round bale use, getting tired of no cab and dust.

986 or 1086 would be my choice. Some parts for the German engine can be hard to get. There were a lot more of 1086 sold.
