Depends on which pump. There are 4 options.

1979-80 model 686 with 310 engine. That's all I
know so far, as we have not torn into it yet.
It's a gear model, not hydro. Do you mean there
are four different model pumps, and if so is that
significant in how difficult the replacement is?

for the German diesels there are 2 different pumps. 3/4" shaft or 1" shaft on the hub. Other than that it shouldn't be a bad job. You shouldn't need to remove the water pump cast iron backplate. Just unholy the water pump .

Thanks, Kevin. I guess we will have to tear into
it to find out which one we have. Probably
dangerous to buy the new pump ahead of time.

Rebuild kits should be available. Did mine years ago.
