1086 steering cylinder threads

The threads on the end of the steering cylinder on the 1086 are shot. This is a loader tractor. The cylinder rod has pulled out of the ball joint twice so I drilled a 1/4 inch hole through the threaded part of the ball joint while the cylinder rod was threaded into it and drove a double roll pin through it. This is only a temporary fix. Yesterday I had to drive the roll pin out and poke a new one in there because the first roll pin collapsed so it's obvious my temp fix is inadequate. This is a 17000 hour tractor and the cylinder is the original so it's done well but the last four years it's had this loader on it so there's a lot more pull on the ball joint than there used to be.

My question is, is there an aftermarket fix for this, a cylinder with a bigger rod or stronger attachment to the ball joint, or am I stuck with what IH has to sell me? Jim

I thought about welding. I'm afraid of the rod breaking off from the welding and I'm not sure how well the welding will stick to the cast ball joint. I haven't talked to my local CIH dealer to price a new rod or a new cylinder, whatever it would take to fix it up good.

Aftermarket is available. I know HY-CAPACITY has the cylinder and the end, and maybe AG PARTS, LTD. does as well.

Protect the rod with tin and tape wrapping. Weld with Ni Rod, make a nice fillet, remove the roll pin and weld that hole full as well. You can't hurt it, and if you are not going to take it into traffic till it roves its worth, your weld might make a permanent fix. Jim

I'm about 45 miles from a salvage that probably has one. Hy Capacity is 50 miles away but I'd probably have to find a dealer. Jim, you know more about welding than I ever will but, respectfully, I have a fear of the welding chrystalizing the shaft and possibly having a catastrophe if it breaks. I will be loading big bales starting Wednesday and I don't trust it the way it is fixed now so some kind of a good fix will be happening soon.

There was a change made to the cylinder rod and ball joint that increased the diameter of the threaded area, holds up much better.

if you get a salvage yard cylinder keep in mind that there are two different bodies used depending on whether it's an original pin style anchor or the ball joint style. The difference is in the location of the pivot on the cylinder.

I would recommend against welding the cylinder because of the potential of breakage and losing the ability to reseal the cylinder if the left side seal decided to start leaking profusely.
