Cornpicker fire exstinguisher?

I found what might be a rare item for sale, listed as an antique corn picker fire extinguisher. tractor mounted. I have never seen one before, and it looks like it might be a carbon tet based one, with the glass bowl and steel top. I have never seen one, nor have I ever heard of one.

Anyone here familiar with that accessory? Is it a load of crap? is it real?

Here is a picture from the add:

Just disposed of the old carbon tet fire extinguishers at the farm. Two of them were the bare glass spheres and three of them were like yours except for red plastic exterior (all possibly from the 1950's). They had the glass spheres inside with a spring loaded mechanism that would break the glass if enough heat was detected at the bottom (melting the solder I think). I doubt if they had anything to do with use on tractors or corn pickers. One at the farm was hung (at ceiling level)over the wood stove in the tobacco stripping room.

Carbon Tetrachloride produces Phosgene gas (deadly) when burnt. No wonder it is banned from use. Our local VFDP lost a member in the 1950s from Carbon Tet. Jim

That was back in Northern Indiana I was about 7 or8 when my dad removed all Carbon Tet extinguishers from the farm. One I remember was on the right hand sheet metal of the SH Mounted corn picker. Jim

Good Idea to carry a fire extinguisher on a mounted corn picker.

Also a shot gun for pheasants.

My grandmothers old Victorian house was full of em up in the attic. Course the house would have been totaled by the time they went off. and the old house was full of white or yellow pine. Burn like a torch.

We had a big fire going and stood around throwing the glass balls into the fire. It slowed the fire down a little, but would not have put a good sized fire out.

Kinda of a traveling salesman type thing, like lightning rods and gutters.
