300U Loader Lower Speed

I have an International 300 Utility with a factory front end loader that I've restored over the years. I use it on occasion, and my main issue with this set-up is that I cannot control the lowering speed of the bucket. Much as I try moving the lever ever so slightly, it seems the valve is either off or full on. The more load in the bucket, the worse it is. Any ideas?

If you had a local hydraulic shop I'm sure they
could help you. You could put an adjustable
orifice in parallel with a one way check valve
between the valve and the cylinders. You could
adjust the orifice to a point that you're happy
with the drop speed and have the check valve set
to open when lifting so you don't restrict the
lifting speed. Good luck. Sam

1 way or 2 way cylinders can make a difference. If 2 way a simple flow control valve in the lower side will help and can even get to the point it drops so slow it will take to much time

Live with it dude. Mine does the same thing. NOW...if you have brand new handles on the valve you can pop them a little and you can catch it some times. that spline at the end of the valve is steel and the handles are pot metal. Make sure you lube you power steering unit!

Had a simar problem with a Paulson loader on my M.
Adjustable flow control valve from Surplus Center was the best, and easiest fix. Probably cheapest too!

Sorry, something is wrong in your valve. I don't know what, but something, because you should be able to "feather" that valve and easily control the drop speed of that bucket.

The problem with these flow control devices is they also slow your UP speed. So you're either fidgeting with a flow control every time you change direction, or you're growing old waiting for the loader to raise.

This lift has single acting cylinders (and the valve is switched to S).

I did find something worth checking in the loader manual. It says to hook the hydraulic line to the front port of the valve. It's currently hooked to the rear port. I don't see where that would make a difference, but I'll swap and try it. That change will also make operating counterintuitive to me since I'll now be pushing the lever forward to raise.

Here is a check valve that will work for you. It flow with no restriction in one direction as the check valve comes off the seat and oil flows around it. In the other direction the oil has to flow through the small hole.

The one I got from Surplus Center is adjustable, and only restricts flow in one direction, up to 25gpm, I think.

I like it so much, I'd put another on, even if it wasn't a necessity. Nice when trying to set something in place with precision.
