I bought a farmall m with a loader on it and the hydraulic cyl. wouldn't hold the loader up it would leak back slowly and i think the guy thought it was low on oil and he just kept putting oil in it i think. it had two way hydraulic on it a plumers night mare which brings me to my question i had oil leaking out of the inspection cover on the bottom dripping out and the rear end oil was 2.5 gallon over full is there any way oil can get from the hydraulic to the rear end it sure looked the same if it was way over full could this happen
Thanks for any help

It sounds like maybe he was putting oil in the rear end, thinking that's where the hydraulic fluid went.

Perfect example of why people should get an owner's manual, read it, and understand it, before they even touch their new tractor.

There are three possibilities for why the loader is slowly going down:

1. Oil is leaking past the piston in the cylinder.
2. Oil is leaking past the valve and back into the reservoir.
3. Oil is leaking out of a hose or fitting, on to the ground.

The hydraulics and rear end are separate on an M. Rear end takes 13 (IIRC) gallons of heavy gear lube. Belly pump takes 6 quarts of hydraulic fluid.

Being overfull, the rear end is leaking past the input shaft seal. If you put the correct amount of oil in (until it just starts to run from the check plug on the left side of the torque tube), the leak will be slowed down greatly.

Thanks you guys what i done was drain oil out of the rear end till it stop coming out 2.5 gals later then i pumped 2 quarts or so out of the hydraulic reservoir by on hooking a hose every thing seems to be all right now no leaks now and i under stand the leak back explanation you guys said.
Thanks again
