IH 606 Update...Radiator

Hey guys! Little bit of a bump in the road today...changing all the fluids and installing a freeze plug heater on the new to me 606 gas. Pulled the radiator to have it boiled while fluid was drained. Radiator shop called today and the radiator is toast...$575 to have it re-cored! Not sure if I should just have it done or try and find another used one and hope its in better shape. Book shows part #370293R93, can't find anything online with that part number. Would 370293R91 and/or 370293R92 work?? Thanks!!!

Hey there 606
I grew up running a 606 gas
It always seemed to run a little on the warm side
Spend the money and have it done right
You will be happy you did
Good strong tractor for it's size
Put thousands of hours on ours

I believe the numbers after the "R" indicate minor changes. I know the radiator for my 560 had different numbers from the OE to the replacement. The difference was the filler neck which took a smaller radiator cap than the Original Equipment.

There aren't that many 606's so finding a good used radiator is going to be tough. All the good used ones are likely on running tractors.

It looks like nobody makes a new replacement. Makes sense, because there aren't that many 606's, not enough to be profitable making reproduction radiators at a price people will pay.

The way I see it you've got two choices:

1. Figure that the radiator shop is BS-ing you, take the radiator home and use it.

2. Get the radiator recored.

I took the 656 radiator to a shop in the city near where I work last spring to have the side plates soldered back on. They told me it had a bunch of pinholes in it, it was no good, and needed to be recored to the tune of around $600. I paid them for the solder job, $40, took the radiator home, and Dad put it on the tractor. It hasn't leaked a drop in 6 months.

As you said there are not a lot of 606's around and
I'm not having much luck finding a used
radiator...even if I do, it might not be any better
than what I already have.

Mine wasn't leaking when I took it off, but had
signed of having leaked previously. Local shop had
my dad stop by to show him all the leaks when he was
testing it. Its a one man shop that I've used before
and he has always been VERY reasonable. Right now
its looking like I'll just have him re-core it.
