Farmall C problem

My tractor has (2) problems.
(1) The alternator doesn't work.
(2) There is a hissing sound around the carburetor, and it takes 10 minutes of running time before it will come up to power 1/2 throttle.
Any help with this will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Bob

Find data on the alternator, we can sure help there, but we need a picture of it to give help that will be sure. The hissing is probably an vacuum leak. Common locations are at the flange where the carb attaches, and at the throttle shaft. The manifold can also be cracked in several locations. With it running outside the building, use a propane torch with the nozzle removed (Just the valve and bent tube remaining) turn it on so a little propane is hissing out and use it like a wand around the carb. The engine will pick up speed as you find the leak. It is a pretty safe and sure way to assess the issue. (don't use carb cleaner or brake cleaner, they often contain chlorine, which when burned, can kill yo (phosgene) gas Jim

The hissing sound may be a vacuum leak. If your alternator has an external regulator it may be the problem. You should see 14.0 to 14.5 volts across the battery terminals with the engine above a fast idle using a volt meter. If you only see 12.0 volts pull the alternator and have it checked where they rebuild starters, generators or alternators. Most auto parts stores have rebuilt alternators. Hal
