Loose C113 sleeve and insanity

Why? Because I'm nuts, I suppose.

Head is removed from Super A block. Block was seized and is now freed up, but one of the sleeves came up a bit. Have driven the sleeve back down and engine spins by hand crank with sleeve in place.

Thinking of putting old gasket back on, head back on without plugs. Loosely snugging head bolts, add diesel fuel, then installing starter and spinning the engine for 5 seconds or so at the time over the next few weeks to keep things "loose".

Not ready to fully re-assemble the engine.

Am I nuts? Comments....

Thanks.

Diesel haven't I taught you better?? ATF yes but even then if one sleeve came up you need to pull that sleeve and piston out and clean up the block and install a new set of o-rings or it will leak since it is a wet sleeve engine

Yes, you've taught me better, Old. I'll try and remember ATF, not diesel.

I know the sleeve will have to be re-installed correctly, just not ready to do much more with it now; just basically hold it over for the winter, then see how deep we want to go.

Thanks!

Oops, Old, will I damage anything with that sleeve, piston, whatever - by spinning it briefly on occasion as I've mentioned.....before re-installing the sleeve properly?

Not planning on trying to fire it up; just spin the engine.

If you bolt the head back down and yes you do not have to torque it down then do an ATF treatment you should be able to let it sit over winter as long as you make sure you keep ATF in the cylinders till your ready to do more

Thanks, Old.

Went to Walmart tonight and bought couple gallons of ATF - so I will FORGET diesel for such purpose.

Hi Old, agree with you on ATF to free things up. Just over a year ago I bought a barn stored 1923 10-20 tractor with no compression. Took the plugs out and put ATF in the bores, left it a month then turned it over and refilled the bores with ATF. After the fourh soaking we towed the tractor in high gear and after 30 yards we had four good compressions and the engine soon started on the handle. MJ

equeen,--Guys, If the Cylinders aren't pitted too badly, Why not just take a Ball Hone and re dress the cylinders, re install the one cylinder that moved. Clean up the pistons. Rings?? reuse or get new and then go back together with what you have if all else looks OK???
I just do not see where reassembly, will really help you since you are at this point.
Running the engine with the starter might scare a relatively useable cylinder and render it unusable. Go ahead and find a ball hone and get after it! My thoughts!

PS.. Yes, you can do what you asked I just do not see the value in it!

Is this the type of ball hone of which you write?

Your sleeves should be measured for wear and as been mentioned you should install new seals. Now would be good time to rebuild the engine with a new sleeve/piston kit. Have the crankshaft measured for wear at your local auto machine shop and have them furnished the new bearings. You don't want to have to tear down this engine again. I did this in 1975 with a Farmall A. I pulled the engine and steam cleaned the block. I had the clutch disc relined too. Hal
