M overdrive

I have a M with over drive, I plan to use it to run standby cen., I will put trans. in overdrive so I can run engine at 3/4 throttle rather than full throttle. Will the overdrive trans. get lubed? Thanks to all and "Happy Thanksgiving!" Pete

Yes it is internal to the trans. To assure correct voltage and Cycles Per second, use a shaft tachometer to get 540 at the PTO. The generator output may be reduced at part throttle due to engine load dragging RPM down. Jim

Sounds good in 'theory'.But I agree with Jim. That gen will take some ponies if it really gets to 'gennin'.one third/one half throttle wont cut it.

Run a 13,000 watt generator with a H with 350 engine in overdrive and worked fine if there wasn't much of a load. The engine wasn't running fast enough to keep rpm's steady when to much load was added voltage would begin dropping below acceptable levels.
It worked fine to run 2 refrigerators a couple lights, TV, furnace & well pump. Had to put back in standard drive to use hot water heater, cook stove, clothes dryer etc. Used generator for 7 days(around 60 hrs) in Dec 07 after ice storm until power was restored, would not be without one.

If you don't have a tach, just plug an old fashioned electric lock into the generator. When the speed of the clock matches the speed of your watch you are at 60 cycles. I did it this way for years.

Back in '97 we had an ice storm and lost power for a week, after the first day grandpa had enough of the cold and got the M out and hooked up to the stand by plant, it handled the house very well until grandma, out of habit, put something into the microwave to thaw! That old M really snorted when she hit the start button on the microwave, grandpa came running out of the shop like he'd been shot when he heard that! Needless to say grandma got an ear full when he got in the house! Later that day we got the MD warmed up enough to start and got that coupled to the generator, it sure burned less fuel in 24 hours compared to the M.
