Brother in law purchased a 686, cranks and starts and runs good, but doesn't want to move to higher gear as he pushes lever incrementally. I know a little about small tractors like Ferguson, but don't know enough on these tractors to help him. Any suggestions on first place to look? It does have all fluids, which are up to level, but have not yet been changed. Thanks for replies.

I have a second question. The manuals listed are for an early and a later model 686 diesel (It is a diesel). Does anyone know how to distinguish between the two? Thanks again.

The easiest way to tell the difference is on the right side of the engine; a 310(german diesel) will have 1 oil filter laying down about midway of the engine, the 312 will have 2 oil filters (upside down) at the rear of the engine like most 66 series diesels.

I assume the lever is the inside gear shift lever that selects gears 1 thru 4. It will push hard if the clutch is dragging a bit. Pulling the throttle back to idle helps sometimes. The linkage under the floor could be rusted up too. I doubt if there is anything wrong inside the transmission.

The 686 is still like the 656, a glorified SMTA.

Shift pattern on the right is:

R 2 4
--N--
1 3 5

The left lever is for the TA

He says it's hydro. I have not seen it yet. He
says it runs fine with lever back toward driver,
but does not accelerate when he pushes the lever
forward. Lever he refers to is on the left side I
believe. Sorry to be vague, but based on his
testimony it does not appear to be gear drive.

It has the one oil filter horizontal on right, so
it must be a 310. It also has two filters on left
that apparently are fuel filters??

The tractor he has must be an Hydro 86 instead of a 686. Basically the same tractors, just different transmissions.

Have him move the control lever more to the side as he moves it forward. Quite a few problems have been reported here about wear and adjustment of the side movement of that lever causing problems.

You can also search the archived threads here dealing with 656 Hydros. Still basically the same tractor.

Get on ebay and try and find a trouble shooting manual for the 544/656 hydros. If will have a section on how to adjust the forward reverse lever. If it will pull in reverse there's a good chance the lever needs adjustment. Eason
