T20 Governor

Ok guys, looking for some assistance here. been running my T20 after an engine rebuild to get her broke in. Everything works as it should except for a little problem with the throttle. It starts fine on idle but you have to work the lever back and forth a few times to get it to rev up to opperating speed. When you go to idle back down, it won't immediately slow down. Keeps running at speed for a minute or so until it finally slows down . All the linkage seems to be working free, could there be something sticking in the governor? Also, what's the aluminium stub on the back of the governor suppossed to do? On other tractors of this timeframe, the adjustment would be for setting the governed speed. I've cranked it in and cranked it out and can't tell any difference.
Thanks

Yes, the aluminum stub is for adjusting the speed. I believe tightening it should make it run faster. It is a non variable speed governor that governs at full speed only. During the rebuild did you have the governor apart?

All I did was unhook the linkage to get it out. I measured where it was then reset it in exactly the same spot when I put things back together. Is there a process to adjusting the linkage properly? It's not in the operators or engine manuals I have. where abouts should that stub be set? Is there any risk in getting it running too fast? Or do they max out around their rated speed?

hard to tell without being there. For all I know the governor is not doing anything and yes, it could be running way too fast in that case. otherwise the aluminum knob should set the speed. No other linkages would matter except for slowing it down. I usually find the aluminum stub screwed down tight as the old farmer was trying to get all the speed he could. You would need a tach to check it. That's probably what I'd advise you. In absence of a tach check ground speed according to a chart. Here is the link to the nebraska test that will give you the specs

Sounds like the throttle shaft (inside the tube that bolts to the carb) is sticky. We have a regular thats like that. Just tap on the tube a bit and it comes right up to speed or down to idle.

Well, I'll be... That worked! Is there a way to fix it permanently? Would a squirt of oil hurt anything? If not I'll have to hire someone to walk along with me with a rubber mallet every time I run it!

Thanks Cowman. Wonder when they boosted the rpm's up to 1400? My serial tag is stamped 1400 as the rated RPM's. I think all the literature out there says the F20 runs at 1200 and T20 1250.

Oil won't hurt it. Yes, by all means oil it good. I think it would normally get oiled by crankcase vapors. But after years of sitting things get rusty and sticky.
