MW 9 speed in a Farmall M, good option?

Hey guys,
Is the M&W 9 speed an awesome option? It would allow for selecting the appropriate ground speed to match RPM. More for PTO work like bush hogging and such? I like Farmall M's, and have always wondered if the aftermarket 9 speed transmission is a good functional option. Anyone operate an M with that option? Thoughts?

We had one. It is an awesome option. The primary use for it when it first came out was to let you pull a rotary hoe with an M or H. It would let you pull wagons to town at a lot more reasonable speed than the M's fifth gear as well.

Not real sure of this, but i dont think u can use the PTO, when it's in the overdrive side of the transmission, It makes the PTO run to fast ! but if u have the hand clutch with the 9 speed, you would have Live PTO in the regular speeds!

All the '9 speed' is for is to give 4 more gears between 4th and 5th.This to make rotary hoeing and wagon pulling more eficent.

yes to what Harry said. it does increase speed of the PTO in the overdrive range by 40-50%?? I use my H with 9 speed in overdrive on my wood splitter at 1/4 throttle and works fine. Probably should not use it in overdrive for heavy PTO work,IMHO.

It will also over speed the belly hydraulic pump unless the M & W model has a disconnect like my 9 speed Heisler model does. Everything driven through the transmission except 5th (roadgear) will be increased significantly when engaged. I would be very cautious using the PTO and belly pump at high throttle settings without a disconnect. I believe they came into existence like noted by Delta for rotary hoes and hauling wagons at a respectful speed when needed, Hal.

i have one on one of my m's. best thing since a pocket on a shirt. really makes a more useful tractor out of it. when in high range just push the belly pump control all the way forward.

I have an M with a nine speed, I am wondering if I run it in overdrive to run my standby generater and disconnect the lift all drive, will the over drive get lubed while running just the pto? thanks Pete

Run a 13,000 watt generator with a H in overdrive and worked fine if there wasn't much of a load. The engine wasn't running fast enough to keep rpm's steady when to much load was added and voltage would begin dropping below acceptable levels.
It worked fine to run (2 refrigerators, lights, TV, furnace & well pump). Had to put back in standard drive to use( hot water heater, cook stove, clothes dryer etc). Used generator for 7 days(around 60 hrs) in Dec 07 after ice storm until power was restored, would not be without one.

Since the speeds are between 4th and 5th and tillage and bush hogging won't work well in 4th unless small, the other 4 gears are not suited for tillage unless it is very shallow. Better for rotary hoes, or windrowing or pulling trailers, etc.
