300 brake???

The left brake recently has been locking up every time it is applied. I just bought a new actuator since I have tried everything else --balls, springs, new disks, had the parts surfaced and machined. Today I took it apart and both disks were stuck to the drum and inner plate. I had to take a screwdriver and hammer to tap on the outer edge to get them off. The bull pinion has some wear notches in the splines where the disks ride. I removed it and plan on sanding those notches smooth. With the new actuator and disks in the drum, there is about a 1/32 space there. With the old one in, there is maybe 1/16. I did not measure to see if it was .030 or more at this time, but why were the disks stuck? Could the notches cause the lock up?

Yes they can. Smoothing them will help. .031" is about the 1/32" you measured. Clean the friction surfaces with laquer thinner and roughen the disks and surfaces with about 200 grit paper to deglaze them. Jim

Disk brakes on those tractors can drive you nuts after a few months. I use a sand blaster on them.. Kid you not. Hold the nozzel about 6 in away and JUST dust them till you break that surface glaze. DO NOT HIT THEM just DUST them!!!! Zip-Zip is all. They will work like magic after. Also the balls cannot have any pits and the pockets must be simetrical. Also you need the springs top and bottom. A dab of oil on all of the pivots too. Also remember the brake pedal hanging up on the shaft that runs from one side of the tractor to the other side. Make sure they move nice and free.
