MW Handcluth round 2

I am having no luck sliding the assembly out of the brake drum. I have taken the cover off and removed the adjusting nut and slotted washer off. Is there something else that holds it in? The tempratures are pretty cold here right now. 11 here last night. Could moisture be freezing it in place? I am going to get a heat gun tomorrow and see if that helps. Any tips or suggestions? Thanks for any help, Lee

Put the nut and such back on.

You will be pulling the whole assembly.

Look on this site and get the scanned pages. They all come out the same way.

It may take a little nudge from a pry bar as the clutch plates and splines in the differential are all dragging.

And be careful, it is heavy when it exits that brake drum.

Again, post a pic so we can see what you see.

Some folks have locked these in various manners over the years.

If the clutch plate splines are rusty or dirty where the plate teeth go in the drum they can be hard to slide out.

Will try on the pics but it will be tomorrow probably. Would it be ok to spray brake cleaner around the area where the assembly contacts the drum? I may try that after I heat it. I am cautious about forcing things because it seems when I have in the past something snaps and it gets expensive.

Did it work??? were you actually using it????

Like Slater said they can stick in the drum.

If you can get the cam off then you can take it out one piece at a time if you have to.

Oh, everything in there is expensive to non existent.

It is on a super M that I have a New Idea corn picker mounted on. It did work but started to slip so it has been in the shed about a year. I had to drive it out of the shed to remove the picker front unit to get to the handclutch. It seemed to slip less if I held the lever forward. About 20 years ago I had an old guy work on it for me. I still have 2 new fiber discs that a clutch shop in Knoxville made for me at the time.

If you have been using it then it should not be stuck too bad.

You never did answer how much thread is showing past the nut.

I am not sure but I think there was quite a few threads past the nut.I will try to put it back on tomorrow pm and check.

If you have a lot of threads then you have something worn out on the inside.

Lee, I have two of these hand clutches. It seems to me that you might be over thinking your problem. When mine need a little adjustment, slipping becomes obvious, because a slight push on the lever corrects the problem. Adjust the clutch and try it before pulling the unit. Ellis

Thats sort of what I thought.[Something worn out] Things keep getting complicated,i.e. sickness and work and I have to work on it a little at a time.[frustrating!]Thanks so much for your help. When I get it out I will post back.

Thanks Ellis. I tried tightening it but very little improvement. After I got the front unit off the picker I tried to tighten it more but it wouldnt go.

I put the nut back on friday and when I tightened it down there is only a couple of threads showing. I put the cover back on but havent had time to drive it yet. I cleaned everything good but couldnt pull the unit. My thinking at this point it drive it and see if it slips . If it slips I will try to drive it enough to loosen the unit so I can pull it. It will be monday or tuesday before I can drive it. I will be back on here as soon as I do this. Thanks so much for the help!

If you only have a couple threads it is new inside or you now have the balls out of place.
