Farmall M Lift-all

The lift-all on my 44 M has not worked since I've owned the tractor. Have some interest in getting it working so have it out and pulled it apart today. It seems the inner control shaft has not been engaged with the pump assembly ( the dog was not in the recessed notch).

I'm wondering if the inner control shaft is indexed with a keyway before I take the bolt out which clamps the dog to the shaft. If not, how does one get the dog in the right orientation?

I hope this makes sense. Kinda difficult to explain.

Are you trying to put the pump back in the reservoir and get the shafts re-engaged? The easiest way I have found is to pull the pump control lever into the latched position (lever on pump will move toward front of tractor). Then rotate the shaft on the reservoir almost fully forward. This is with the reservoir on its front and the shaft will want to rotate that direction anyway. Then you can lower the pump assembly into the reservoir and slightly left and then once down it should slide a little to the right and the two will be engaged. You can confirm by then rotating the control shaft with some big pliers and it should pop back into the bypass mode.

Scribe a line on the dog and the shaft as a reference mark so you get them aligned properly during reassembly.

I would think there is a keyway or flat on the shaft to ensure proper orientation, though.

I've looked at what I can see on the shaft and can't see a keyway or flat. Doesn't mean there isn't one there as I can't see much. I have a suspicion that the orientation was wrong before I opened it up. Just want to get it right before I put it back together and get it in the tractor. Thanks.

If question is about the inside lever on the end of the control shaft and outside lever. It has a key or a washer that acts as a key. Can't remember for sure at the moment which. Think its a washer but not going to say for sure. You can remove the lever retaining bolt, washer and then pull the shaft out for seal replacement if wanted.
