656 farmall shift lever mechanism

Does anyone have experience working on the shifting mechanism located behind the dash?Awhile back one of my kids was moving tractor for me.He got it stuck between two gears he tried to force it back to neutral and a Dowel dropped out.Put Dowel back in,now it will only shift from first to reverse and back.Lever will not in move in or out to shift into other gears.Unhooked upper clevises and second and third levers from the right just flop up and down.Shift handle won't engage those two levers. Are parts available to rebuild this?Thank's

They are just an old-fashioned bastage.

Think you've got the dowel pin in the wrong hole on the inside shaft.

There were several changes to the shift linkage on a 656. The dowel pins were changes to square pins. The shift gates were changed from a single piece to three pieced. The casting that the handle attaches to was changed to facilitate assembly when using the shaft with the square pins.

In your case most likely you don't have the dowel centered in the shift cross shaft so that the pin can't get through the shift gate when trying to move across to another pair of gears.

Thank's Owen and Allen for the reply.Owen you were right the dowel wasn't centered.Took it all apart to see how it worked.Detent ball and spring was missing.I put a spring and ball in there and it seems to hold better when shifting to the second and third gear lever.Seems like dowel could fall out again over time.Maybe cover bottom of slot in the two outside levers.

The square pins are supposed to hold better than the round ones. Also the additional changes allow it to be assembled without having the pin removed from the shaft.

When it locks up again try moving the lever back though the gears again starting with reverse,1,2,3,4, & 5. Usually that will unhang it. Make sure your operators know this trick also. It will save a lot of harsh words. Dad bought a 544 utility row crop and it locked up the second day. I have a 664 and if you rush the shifting it will lock up.
