1256 Row Crop

What is the difference between a 1256 and a 1456 row crop?
Is the 1456 just the later year model or there other changes? I
have a line on a 1256.

Well what they told me, it had a 4 roller pump, instead of the 2 roller , wider bull gears and wider pinion, also more teeth on the ring and pinion to take more stress, etc. Maybe a bigger turbo too, not sure on that ! I had one, good strong tractor, except for that worthless hyd seat they had!

1456 had 3.5" rear axles, 1256 had 3.25" rear axles, and other rear end parts were beefed up in the 1456.

20.8-38 rear rubber was an option on the 1456. I don't think it was on the 1256 (or maybe 20.8's didn't even exist yet).

1456 had a "improved" WFE center tube with a welded wishbone. What normally was the top of the center tube on earlier tractors was turned about 1/8 of a revolution on the 1456 where the 1256 and earlier WFE's had the bolt-in wishbone and the retaining pins for the knees sat straight up and down. I may be imagining it, but the 1456 seems to turn a bit tighter, and the outside of the front tires seem to wear off a bit sooner than 1206's, 1256's, etc., when set properly.

Pump was changed and the engine put out a few extra horses. I don't remember off the top of my head if the injectors and/or turbo were changed.

Although they both had the DT407,the 14 had bigger wrist pins(1 5/8) wearas the 12 'only' had 1 1/2" pins.

I forgot about the wrist pins. Didn't the 1456 have a larger radiator, or a spacing difference with the fan? For some reason I don't think the hoods will interchange.

Both are awesome old horses.

Yep your right about the bigger rear ax , and the front end pins were at a 45 degree angle instead of the vertical pins. Like you say the fan, or radiator, was bigger also to cool the extra power.

Another thing was larger brakes disks, longer hood for the bigger radiator and the front cast grill was bumped out a couple inches for that reason.
