Cub 3rd gear

Hello All,
I have a question about my cub, when I have it at full throttle and I try to start out in 3rd gear the motor really bogs down and it almost dies before it takes off. I really have to feather the clutch to keep it running. After it gets moving it sounds fine. I am new to cubs so I wasn't sure if this is normal. If I am working the cub in first or second it is fine, even pushing a bit of dirt with the blade. Thanks in advance for the help.

Okay thank you. I figured so but like I said I'm new to these and wanted to be sure. Although they are low HP they are amazing dirt pushers!!! I love it!

That is exactly how my 1957 Cub has always worked in third gear. They are really only about 10 hp for the early Cubs and about 15 hp for Cubs after 1960.

A well tuned, not worn out cub will take off in 3rd gear on level ground with no problem what so ever, but you do have to let the clutch out easy, not just dump it. I would suggest checking the timing first, and maybe adjusting the valves.

I have not had much use for 3rd gear in a Cub. If I ever rebuild another Cub transmission, I would like to try replacing 3rd gear with something more practical. You can get new gear sets with different ratios from a Cub Cadet puller outfit. Maybe change out the 16/26 slider for a 16/18 and associated lower gears.
