986 electric problems

It started out, could not get the heater fan or radio to come on at all. Finally started working, maybe 15 minutes after turning it all on. Then when you turned the fan on the radio went off. Now the radio has worked, but can't get the heater fan on. Operator's manual has no wiring diagrams.

A grounding problem between the cab and the chassis is a likely problem. Use a jumper cable to give it a temporary ground and it is a easy fix if it then works. Jim

Probably the cab relay. Usually turning key off and on, listening for the cab relay click, and if blower & or radio come on when trying that you can be sure it is cab relay. You can easily check for power on relay terminals. One large terminal is hot always, other large and small terminal should be hot with switch on. I understand the new relays from CASEIH are not reliable anymore and most like to get hold of a prestolite relay from other sources.

Yeah, I agree that it is probably the cab relay, it's behind the door below the dash. I used to carry a jumper wire in there with it for just such occasions.

I just did this on a 1586, although I thought it was an all or nothing deal. Everything either worked or it didn't. Can't swear by that though. May have just been my case. Anyhow, if it is like the 1586 there is a panel door that opens under the steering column. Pretty much dead center is the cab relay. Easy to replace. The one I got from CIH works fine so I will keep my fingers crossed on that. If your relay proves OK, then a ground issue is almost always at fault when electrical functions are erratic.

Easy to replace unless you have an early production tractor. The first ones did not have the nuts fastened to the front of the cab. They pretty much need two people to replace them

That is correct. Mine has the loose nuts and it takes two people. Helps if one has skinny fingers. I guess most of the stuff I work on is harder though, because it didn't cause me much trouble other than a few verbal commentaries on the engineering skills of the individual who decided to leave those nuts loose in there. :)

I just replaced thr cab solenoid on my 986. Goes a lot easier with another set of hands. I bought a Prestolite one carried by Hy-Capacity but bought it through my local Case IH dealer. I wasn't having the intermittent issues like you described just went from everyhing working (lights radio blower fan) to only having flashers one day.

I think Jim has the answer. Ground. Cab solenoid is either on or off. Yes, mine has those loose nuts too. Next time I have to replace the solenoid the nuts will be tacked to the firewall before I start wrenching. A second set of hands rarely walks into my shop when I need them.
