Looking for IHC Implement NOS Item.

Need part no. 460866R92 which is the front half (the shielded joint assembly which connects to the tractor's PTO shaft) of the PTO Drive Joint Assembly for an IH PTO driven hay rake. I located the correct back half at the Part Depot in Wisconsin but the front half has been very elusive. I've looked at various resources where difficult items can be found like Goggle, the Depot, and other on-line locations I am aware of without any success.
This item is used for Farmall 240, 340 and International 240, 340 Utility model tractors with 1 3/8" spline PTO shafts and the No. 11 IHC fast hitch side delivery hay rake and possible other applications. A serviceable used item would be satisfactory as well but will probably be unmarked as to a part number.
Any help in this matter will be sincerely and greatly appreciated and my email is open for contact, Hal.

Wow, talk about the proverbial needle in a needle stack in a stack of hay stacks.

Is there any reason a generic PTO shaft would not fill the bill?

That should be available anywhere that sells pto parts. They are all standardized.Or are you a member of 'Correct Police' and it just HAS to be factory perfect?Serously, all ptos are standard sizes, any implement dealer/farm store should fix you up.IH was not one to do fancy exotic stuff

For functionality, true one of the newer plastic shielded ones would work but for a true IHC Product Restoration it certainly wouldn't be an option. Thanks for the response but I am down to probably this one item (and a single decal) in finding an original part after spending eight years searching for parts for this restoration, Hal.

Delta, You are correct, if I was looking for a field use rake item but this is a very rare and produced in very small numbers hay rake in the late 1950's. It was built for IH 2 point fast hitch tractors of the mid and late 1950's only and a conversion package was available to modify for use on some Ford and Ferguson 3 point tractors. It was replaced in 1961 with the No. 12 which was designed for 3 point tractors with a conversion package for IH fast hitch tractors. I am not a "Correct Police" but just expend the time and effort to do the very best original restoration possible which will require this item. The PTO drive components are different depending on what IH model tractor the fast hitch hay rake is being used with. I have the original correct parts for use on a Super C and 200 but the Farmall 240 and 340 PTO joint shaft assemblies are quite a bit different. I have a NOS rear portion of the shaft to match to my 240 but am trying to find the matching front part which attaches to my 240 PTO. Someone out there with some NOS inventory is most likely to have the correct original shaft and shield assembly. From my experience IH wasn't shy about producing spare or replacement parts and you would be surprised what all I have found for this project in very strange places. I am trying to have this restoration complete to display at the 2015 RPRU along with my Farmall 240, Hal.

Hal, what is the size of the rectangle shaft or is it square? and what size safety shield and does it need to fit inside or outside and male shaft or female? I bet a lot of implements used the same size and if you found a longer one you could shorten it. I have a pile of shafts but I don't know if any have safety shields on them.

Cowman, I think you are correct in that IH most likely used a lot of standardization in these shafts except for lengths. I don't know the minimum length required as the rake is all disassembled and painted ready for reassembly at this time so this cannot be measured presently.
The shaft on the NOS rear piece is the solid rectangular one in shape being 11/16" X 13/16" and it has the smaller diameter shield being what looks like 1 3/4" diameter on the outside. I believe this would make it the end that slides into the front portion which would be the square tubular shape something like 3/4" X 7/8" on the inside. I'm thinking the front shield would also be on the outside but don't really know. If that being the case I believe the front shield ID would have to be something a little greater then the 1 3/4" OD of the rear shield. The PTO pieces for the Super C application have a larger diameter shield and I haven't checked to see if the two shafts are the same for both combinations but they appear to be the same and I know they are both rectangular in shape as well. From looking at my part catalog I believe the back joint assembly I obtained from the Depot appears to be what is called the Rockwell Standard version in the catalog. It still has the original IH part label attached stating the correct part number and the chain drive sprocket on the rear which pins to the drive shaft is correct as well.
If you find something you believe is compatible let me know as it could be cut to length in combination with what I have for a complete IH PTO shielded joint drive assembly. The Farmall 240 tractor has the larger size 1 3/8" spline PTO shaft so that front coupling will have to be sized for the larger shaft. If you need some better dimensions I can provide them tomorrow when I'm out and can get some calipers to obtain some very accurate measurements. Thanks much for getting into this matter and hopefully we'll find the perfect combination. I have a few parts from the rake here in my den including the rear PTO joint assembly which Carol is now calling the IH Parts Warehouse, Hal.

This is gonna be a tough one, as I can only find this part being used on the #11 rake. The info fiche dated 2/5/85 shows that 460866R92 is replaced by 458996R92, which is the front half of a driveshaft used on 100 trailing mowers from '59-60 with a Rockwell Standard shaft. I can not find this cross reference or any other cross references in any of my old substitutuion books or fiche, so try and double check this from somewhere/somebody else if you go this route.

I dug around my personal stash. I don't have either of those part numbers, or a complete shaft assembly (460865R92). I'll check the dimensions and see if I have anything that could be shortened, or something that may be tagged wrong or not tagged at all. I don't think I have more than 2 or 3 shafts with a steel shield, though.

Just curious, do you know why they did not offer the Borg-Warner shaft for the column E and F machines in the parts breakdown? Seems a bit odd.

AG

AG, I don't know why the Borg Warner PTO shaft assembly wasn't offered for those tractors in column E and F. The information on the replacement is new to me and might certainly be helpful as this search continues. If you see my response to the Nebraska Cowman I provided the geometry of the NOS Rockwell Standard rear joint assembly I've obtained already. If you have something compatible with the rear assembly please advise and until then I will continue my hunt. The problem in finding the front part is they are sometimes separated from the other half which is permanently attached to the hay rake or other implement while the front half floats around with the tractor somewhere.
Thanks much for your research and information you provided. My email is open if you care to send an email, Hal.

Cowman, I measured the rear half that attaches to the hay rake this morning with an accurate caliper and the male shaft on that assembly measures .750" X .875" within a .001". The outer shield measures 1.750" on the OD with a wall thickness of approx. .0575" as I got several other measurements in various places around the circumference between .055" and .060". The front part I am needing would be the female end in which the above male 3/4" X 7/8" shaft would fit into. Let me know if you have anything in your stockpile that we could make work for this restoration. I will advise if I find anything in the NOS world as well. Thanks for supporting this project, Hal.

AG, my email is open and would you send me an email address or a phone no. for contact as I would like to discuss what you might have available. Thanks for some contact info which will be most appreciated, Hal.
