Update on Farmall 656

Split tractor a few days ago.Like you guys were saying main clutch is fried.I'm gonna update the wiring while tractor is down.Replace factory alternator with an internally regulated alternator, wire in a relay for glowplugs and probably lights and replace all the wiring. After 48 years wiring is roached and it's been hacked on.Fix a few oil leaks around hand pump and pilot valve. And have flywheel resurfaced and install hd clutch kit.I might repaint also.Bought it about two years ago straight tinwork nothing missing original toplink,3ph,dual remotes like new tires.

Well worth your effort. Thanks for the comment on our analysis. "Super" Heavy Duty clutches with ceramic pucks cause two issues that are worthy of consideration. They often are jumpy and more difficult to control when inching around a hookup, and they wear the FW and PP surfaces as much as or more than they wear themselves. Jim

The company I was dealing with offered two clutch kits a standard four pad remanufactured clutch kit or a heavy duty six pad kit.I went with the latter. It didn't occur to me to inquire about clutch facing material.Thank's.

I just installed a HD clutch kit with 6 large pads in a SM. You would never know that this tractor has a HD clutch in it. The tractor operates so smooth. I know that a few years ago Hy-Capacity switch to a new "Carbontic" clutch button. This is not the old ceramic buttom that has been used for years. I was impressed. This new button offers super smooth engagement, long button life from it's unique formula of carbon, copper & iron. I think you made the correct choice. Sorry about the double picture, I don't see a way to remove.

cowmechanic, I have an old 706-D I am replacing the entire wireing system. It has 4 main harnesses and a couple lesser ones too, Using it as a template this is pretty close to what you will need!
Front main, Rear main, Right panel, Left panel, & 2, 3 glowplug harness. Key switch, Tack, fuse, light switches all of it. You will be well served to replace it all! The cost of a complete harness set up will scare you! But as you have said that harness has had well over 45 yrs of heat/cold to dry it out, crack, short out, it is time to replace!!! Hope this helps
Later,
John A.

John A thank's for reply.I'm gonna build my own wiring harness.I should be able to simplify the system by using relays.I think I'll mount a bank of relays where the voltage regulator used to be.One for starter, one for lights and one for glow plugs.I'll buy an original style light switch.Key and pushbutton switches look generic.
