Farmall 460 hydraulic woes continue.

The tractor has the extended industrial style
filter housing with an industrial filter. Fluid
level is well above full. It isn't a freezing
issue as it was doing it before the cold weather
set in. The problem I'm having is the hydraulics
scream when first started and get slightly better
when it warms up. The loader will lift plenty of
weight. The hydraulics work better/faster at an
idle than they do above 1200 RPM or so. Above
that they pulse and scream like they are starving
for oil. After an hour or two of hard use the
hydraulic filter cover is only 70F or so if the
weather is 20F-30F outside so nothing is getting
too hot by any means either. I forget the name of
the thing that has the screen and check valve in
it but the screen has been removed. The tractor
has sat for a couple of years since I did that
though. Any ideas for me?

Mkirsch or ? has suggested enlarging the pilot hole in the regulator safety valve. It is the on demand control. IIRC (do not depend on this) they were .035 and need to be .040" Jim

I believe I may have opened that up when I had it apart 2-3 years ago. The tractor has been an on again/off again project for me. If anyone else would chime in and also thinks that's what could be wrong I'll tear it apart and check it.

If that orfice is the problem the system will be staying on demand all the time and would actually work fine when you are lifting the loader or using any other hydraulic cylinder. The system would also get very hot. Actually the system would sound relieved when ever you used a cylinder with no or light load on it. They were .031 original and many drilled to various sizes, .040 being a good start. I would suspect you have a suction leak at the pump suction tube seal. That is the seal right at the pump. They get hard so they don't seal or damaged when installing pump or not adjusted to proper length.

Pete is stone reliable (I would do it as the issue will eventually cause other problems, and the effort is worth it. Jim

I bought the tractor with a bad pump and TA. The reason the pump went bad more than likely is because of the suction tube being installed incorrectly. When I put in a new pump I installed the seal/tube as it was set on the tube. The seal was soft and pliable with no cracks. Well, after I installed it it sucked air like mad. After figuring out what was wrong I positioned the seal on the tube like it's supposed to be and it worked fine for the little time I used it this fall before the cold weather set in.

Again, the loader works fine at a hi idle. It raises faster at a hi idle than it does at 1800-2100 RPM. All it does at higher RPM's is howl and lift slowly. Sometime it pulses too. Both hi RPM and low RPM characteristics become slightly better as the tractor warms up. I would think if I were still sucking air the loader would still lift faster at a higher RPM than it would at a lower RPM. The loader and steering isn't spongy like it was before when it was sucking air either. The tractor turns over just fine with the starter and idles right down so it doesn't seem like there is any load on the hydraulic system while the levers are all in a neutral position.

Well, that should eliminate the tube alright. Are you sure the filter is not soft and mushy from moisture in the oil. It still sounds like it is cavitating from air or restriction. Only other places to pull air is the o-ring in the split on main suction tube or 0-ring between the two pumps.

The filter was new 2-3 years ago and probably only has under 10 hrs. on it. I know there is moisture in the hy-tran however like all 460/560's. Will excess moisture wreck the filter even if it has very few hrs. on it?

Fought my 560 for the same problem. Someone left a rag in the tranny and the fuzz was plugging the filter after just a few hours. Do the cheap and quick thing and change the filter first.

I am on my 2nd oil change and about 20+ filters so far. I think I have cured it as it is now lasting quite awhile.

Filters will go to heck with no hours on them if there is moisture in the oil. If the paper is soft, it is done in from moisture. If hard and brittle , heat got it.

Well, I'll swap out the filter again then. I just got done moving and my life is kind of a mess right now. I have it written down somewhere but don't remember offhand. I mentioned before that I have the filter extension kit on this 460. What do I order for a filter then? A 460 industrial? A 606? Thanks guys.

I don't know about other sources but a CASEIH dealer can get you that deeper filter as it is used on the industrial tractors. There is a part number floating around here on forum someplace but can't tell you where.
