Looking to buy a 544 international row crop, the salesman drove it and says it jumps out of 2nd gear is this a linkage problem or is it in the transmission.I am about 4 hrs. away,so don't want to drive that far to check it out.if in the transmission does this mean a teardown? Thanks,Pete.

It could be linkage,or it could need alot of repairs. Tell salesman to fix it and you will look at it. If it more than linkage dealer wont want to fix it and you realy dont want it.
Saves you a trip.

Could be linkage, could be internal. There's no way to know without actually getting into it. 2nd gear could just be the tip of the iceberg.

That the dealer did not fix it is a bad sign. If it was an external linkage problem the dealer's mechanics could fix it in a couple hours and then he could ask $1000 more for the tractor.

As it is the tractor is guaranteed to be way overpriced for what it is, because it's on a dealer lot. I would not drive 4 hours to look at it, if it were me.
