i have a 59 farmall 340 and it has a zenith universal carb on it, but it runs rough(slow rev ups, smoke, etc) but it has all new ignition parts and a carb rebuld kit but it still runs bad. i think the carb is bad. not a cracked manifold or blown head gasket or burnt valve for sure. i want to replace with marvel tsx748. thanks

Better run a compression check also check tappets, wires and plugs as your problam probably isnt the carb could also be the dist.

I agree with Gene, getting the engine adjusted is first, timing, and centrifugal advance performance before getting into replacing the carb. What is the float level, is the choke operating fully open and fully closed? Is the air cleaner clean and unrestricted? Were the jets in the carb replaced with the correct size? Jim

No, I don't think it is a bad carb. Carbs hardly ever go "bad." If it is not physically damaged, all any carburetor needs is a rebuild kit, installed correctly.

There's more to it than just stuffing in a few new gaskets and washers. Carburetor rebuilding is kind of an art, but you have to be careful and clean out all the nooks and crannies first and foremost.

There's also 100 other things that could be wrong. A compression check is a good place to start.
