new to me--- just got home with 450 lp standard with ta and power steering (with bad assist cyl). this tractor been sitting under shed for 8+ yrs. at time it was parked all new gauges and seals were installed. it shows 80% on gauge. I was told to open vapor side very slow, did that. it will start and run maybe 3 seconds, will not continue to run. how to trouble shoot this, what to look for. thank for any info

Is the choke working on the carb? You probably have a "sticky" regulator. If you can get it to run with the choke on it may loosen up a bit. The regulator requires a vacuum signal to tell it to open up. Also there is a filter between the tank and regulator. They don't usually clog but it's possible. Loosen a fitting on the line between filter and regulator with the vapor line on and see if you have some pressure.

Try opening the liquid valve and use the choke.
Also if you have only a glass gauge it can be off. The gear mechanism will slip teeth from wore shaft inside. So put some fuel in it to rule that
out.
If you think regulator is bad send it to Welters
tractor co. in Verona Missouri they are a MM dealer but they will work on the ensign w regulator. They are very honest and reasonable.
Let me know what you find . I have four tractors on L.P. Tony

thanks for reply--- not in texas, in s.e.ga I do think it started life out your way.
the choke cable does work after some blaster applied
liquid does not help
next I will loosen line after filter and check for pressure
one person said I may have pressure and very little gas
I do have a 2cyl a jdeere with after market lp kit , it has 1 line to single carb
again I have no experience with lp but I intend to learn some with good advise from good people.

have tried all suggestions. still will not run. I have pressure to regulator. is there a vent on back side of regulator that could be stopped up? is there a check value on intake vacuum? how to trouble shoot the regulator it self? thanks for continued comments.

No check valve on the intake vacuum. Try taking that line loose from the intake, put a small piece of extension hose and apply vacuum from another source and see if it opens up.

Sounds like the low pressure valve could be stuck or gummed up a little. In that case you'll have to take the regulator apart and see what you have. Two tricky parts on that: One is that the screws my be a little corroded on the threads so take it easy and, Two is peeling the edge of the rubber diaphram off of the housing without tearing it.

took regulator apart. there is pin about 1" long floating around inside back cover , looks as if it should attach to center of large diaphragm.it appears I need a repair kit. any advice?

That little pin is what goes between the diaghram and the low pressure side lever. This is your problem.

The pin clips between the two small metal plates in the middle of the diaghram. It should have a head like a tiny nail and then after about 1/4" or so it should get little bigger in diameter. There should be a thin steel plate that helps guide it.

Is there damage or corrosion to the pin or plates on the diaghram?

the thin plate is beat up around the hole for the pin, mabe I can straighten it . have not separated the diaphragm yet. I did order kit from everhart. would like to see parts manuel of model w ensign regulator to see if anything else is misplaced or missing. also the power steering assist cyl has been disconnected the hyd hoses connected together, the attachment points on cyl left open for many yrs, so I will be looking for cyl. any help appreciated.

The I&T manual has a small section on the Lp carb and regulator. It shows a simple cut-away. There's not much to them. On the Low side which you have apart it has the lever, thin steel plate with hole, diaghram and the pin. That's all there is. There's a boss cast into the regulator body that is the height that the long lever should be level with and lined up with.

I have a IH 450 manual with the LP supplement and it has the same information and diagrams as the I&T manual. It covers information on the steering as well. Parts for the Behlen type are NLA but they are pretty rugged and you may be able to fix yours.

If you can't find an I&T manual in time email me and I will try to scan in the pages and send them to you.
