I have the flywheel shaft apart and the new bearings on the shaft. I need to know if anyone has every put these bearings in. How do you check the preload on the bearings? The front cap has shims to set the preload, but I have know idea what it should be. Also what should I use to seal that cap up with?

Tapered roller bearings (in the sizes associated with your mower)are preloaded by adjusting the preload tighter and tighter till the bearing is pretty tight to turn with your hands. Then hit the hub/wheel with a brass drift and one pound hammer to jar it, setting the outer races into their bores and inner races against the stops. Then re "feel" the turning effort by hand and adjust to a light but noticeable drag. This assures the bearings will be firmly oriented when the running preload is set.
If you are nervous about it, check the preload after an hour of run time to be positive. They do not like loose. Jim
