12 conversion coil

Doing a 12 volt conversion on a 52 M. I bought a 12v coil to
put on it. Could I have left the 6v coil on it and would it have
worked?

SURE, if you added a series voltage dropping (12 down to 6 volts) Ballast Resistor you can use a 6 volt coil on a 12 volt tractor.

If you don't add the ballast and applied 12 volts to a 6 volt coil, it will overheat bad, eventually fail, and the points will burn up prematurely. But Billy Bob might say it will still "work" at least until it burns up lol

Your exact question:
"Could I have left the 6v coil"

YES you could have left it

"and would it have
worked?"

YES for a while until it burns up

I THINK YOUR CHOICE TO BUY THAT 12 VOLT COIL WAS WISE or you could have bought a voltage dropping (12 down to 6 volts) Ballast Resistor instead that would have been much cheaper and that would have still worked properly...

See if others agree or disagree???

On my H I used the resistor then wired in a diode from the starter stud to the coil, by-passing the resistor for starting. Have to be careful as it will fire with the switch off as long as you hold the starter button.

Many years ago, I did a conversion like that with a diode bypass. It made me uncomfortable with the safety issue though so never did any more that way.

The 12 volt coil issue again. Fine if it is actually truly a 12 volt. Have to be real careful about that as the markings are not real revealing on some of them.

To further complicate things, there are two types of "12V" coils: Those that need the resistor mentioned by John T, and those that do not.

The coils that do not need the resistor are marked, "No external resistor required," on the coil itself or somewhere on the package.

The coils that need the resistor are essentially the same as 6V coils, and use the same resistor. These are designed to be "boosted" with 12V direct from a tap on the solenoid during starting, so as to provide a hotter spark for easier starting.
