I jumped my farmall 100 it started .when I remove jumper cables it dies this happened several times.what should I check first? 6v positive ground all electrics original 1955 model. Thanks for any help.
 
Man that must be one dead battery. check to see where the water level is too. Could be warped lead plates.
 
If the battery is so dead that it won't keep the tractor running without jumper cables, it is DEAD. There is no hope for it. It must be replaced.

Before you remove the old battery make note where each terminal is connected. Mark the cables with + and - on a piece of masking tape or something. MAKE SURE you do this, or you will not know how the battery goes back in after you get the new one.

Unless you left the ignition on overnight, or left the lights on, and killed the battery that way, you have bigger problems with your charging system.

That little meter on the dash panel that says "Amps" should have the needle pointing to the right of center any time the tractor is running. If it isn't the battery is not being charged.

There is more than just the generator to the charging system. The generator could be perfectly fine, but you have a regulator or wiring problem.

For now you can just get the new battery and charge it manually. That will get you back in business until you have time to learn about the charging system and fix it properly.
 
As Allan said, the gen is bad. Even if the
battery is dead, a good gen puts out enough to
provide ignition power.

Not necessarily. The generator is not putting out basically, but that could be a bad connection, or a bad voltage regulator also. My guess is the voltage regulator. John T has a troucbleshooting guide that will help you!!

For now, get a NEW battery and install it. Also, don't jump any more than you have to because the 12 volts isn't good for your 6 volt system.

Make sure you hook the POSITAVE GROUND up too.
