Value and info on little genius #8

Someone has offered to sell me a little genius #8 two bottom plow. Looks like an H would be the ideal tractor for this. It's in working condition. $240. I want it. What do you all think?

The value of these plows seems to vary a lot according to where you live.
In Wisconsin a good #8 with very good moldboards, all parts on the plow, hitch is complete, and adequate tires will often sell for that $240...and more.

If the moldboards are broken, cracked, or pretty much worn out then that plow is basically a "parts" plow, as good moldboards are hard to find and sell for $50-100.

Look it over carefully to see what I point out.
What state are you in?

If you don't want it, send me a picture of it and I might make the decision for you!
LA in WI

I live in CT where everything is pricy. I'll post pictures of it tomorrow from my computer. But in the mean time it's complete according to seller.

I just paid $300 for a 2 bottom #8 Little Genius. however, it is a 2 bottom 12" plow, with a good bit of the original paint and is in very good shape. while I don't think it was a great price, it was one I was willing to pay considering condition and configuration.

Condition, options, and location mean everything on the price.

One thing to look at is the outer edges of the moldboards. If they have some thickness to them, they have some time left. When they're worn to a razor sharp edge, they're shot.

I guess everything is regional. I haven't seen a #8 sell at an auction for some time, but a 3-bottom #60 IH plow with an axle snapped off and completely missing, other parts badly broken and/or cobbled, and no wear parts other than some junk shares were even on the plow and it brought either $180 or $190 at a sale a couple of weeks ago I went to. It's probably been sent to China by the pound already.
A nice 2-bottom JD 44H with no cylinder but nice wear parts and a beautiful paint job brought $500 and the JD cylinder brought $145 more at an auction the week before. Plow was a very good buy with the wear parts, paint, and nearly new tires that were on it.
A neighbor bought a nice 2-bottom #8 last fall. It had been repainted, but the paint was a bit faded and it looked like cheap paint was used, but all of the wear parts were nearly new. Owner wanted $400 obo., and let it go for $300.

For a 2-bottom #8, I'd bet that....
$40 won't beat the scrap man here,
$100 might buy a yard ornament,
$150 might buy a nicer yard ornament or a plow with good potiental for parts or even a fixer-upper,
$200 might buy something that could go to the field with minimal work,
$300 might buy something that could go to the field with the aid of a grease gun, and
anything above that buys varying levels of paint and additional life left in the wear parts.

AGs little list looks pretty close to what I have seen. For a functional plow might as well plan on $100/bottom on up. I have been buying anything I can find for under $100 just to have parts. That's the beauty of soil sampling. You get to see LOTS of fence rows. :)

I think those bottoms are BA or HSB bottoms with that shin that bolts to the landside side of the frog. Neither style are common around here. More pics of the wear parts and/or part numbers would confirm this.

That's not a bad looking plow there. Might actually be worth every penny of $240.

AG's got a good list, but it doesn't take into account the "crazies." I once chased after a 2-bottom #8 that turned out to be pretty much scrap. You could shave with what was left of the moldboards, and from a distance it almost looked like a disc plow. The seller wanted $250 and would not take a penny less.

From what I can see in your photo's I would by that plow in a heart beat for anything below 450.00.
I got mine given to me but by time I replaced parts took it apart sand blasted ,Painted ,New tires, decals I had well over 1000.00 in it and don't regret it a minute.
Ist picture of when I finished it and second behind my "H" at show.
Its perfect for the "H".
