I have an MD with a bad engine.Thinking of a repower. How hard is a 350/454 Chevy?390Ford? Detroit diesel?Any thoughts/suggestions?This would be just for fun and a little pulling too...

Quite a few Ms have been repowered with small block 350 Chevy engines. I have no experience myself, but it involves redrilling the M flywheel so it will bolt to the Chevy crankshaft, and redrilling the M rear engine mounting plate so it will fit the Chevy. With a little attention to detail, the end result will almost have a factory installed appearance.

I have looked into this a little as I have always wanted an M with a V8. My plan is for an IH V8. It is my understanding that a 304 or 345 will fit between the frame rails and bolt up easily. Low RPMs can use stock tractor flywheel if its in good shape, higher RPMs will require new flywheel be made.

You see a lot of them with Chevy 350s as I think they also fit between the frame rails and are a fairly good fit. With a little engineering and fabrication ability, anything could be adapted. Keep us posted on your progress when you get started on something!

I like the idea of a Non-Chevy because Bow Ties are too common. IH choices are good as are Ford or GMC 2 stroke. Jim

If you can find a GMC V-6, that would be worth looking into. It's shorter and had a deep block and was made to work hard. Possible downside is that it will want some RPM to get in it's powerband.

Someone posted pics of one at a show with a GMC V-12, and it fit well inside the frame.
Cut and paste this for starters:

I've also seen first hand a 6.2 diesel in one and it fit very well. Only a slight mod to the frame for oil filter.

Actually, the GMC V6's are a REAL good engine for an M, they run a lot slower than a V8, make good torque too, a 305 or 351 would be a nice match to an M. 401 or bigger would be a bit big IMO. Dad drove for a livestock trucking co. that had 478's in a couple GMC single axle tractors. They were Hot-Rod's compared to the IH trucks we were used to with RD-450's.

Here's a website with LOTS and LOTS of info. http://www.6066gmcguy.com/EngineData.html

I've looked on that website. Lot's of good data.

I actually have two 305's sitting in trucks. I bought one for the cab and one for the bed. One of the 305's, I believe, will run. The other I'm not sure.

Myself and a good friend put a 7.3L IDI out of a ford truck in a farmall M a few years ago, really wasnt that hard. It makes 240HP on the dyno.
Theres videos on Youtube under Farmall M 7.3IDI

I vote for a diesel, 'cuz it will already have a governor, vs. a gasser to which you will need to engineer and add a belt-drive governor.

Binder/Ford 7.3?

GM 6.2 (which uses the same bellhousing and motor mount locations as an SBC)?

To those who want to argue, both of them could be set to the same governed speed and HP of the original engine.

Saw an H at a show this summer with a 4 cyl 4000
ford diesel in it. Looked almost factory, guy did
a great job. It was at Elnora, In.
