i am looking at a spare motor for a sc. the person that has it tells me its a c-123; how can i be sure it is what he says it is?

Some engine blocks in the series can be increased in displacement to 135cid. Other similar blocks are as much as 153 Cid, but they are not sleeved engines.
There is only one way I know of for positive and that is to remove the head and measure the bore.
Using oil or thick fluid to fill the cylinder when at BDC then moving to TDC and measuring the volume displaced could work if the rings hold the fluid well, then multiply by 4. Jim

At least SOME are stamped "C123" on a machined area just below the cylinder head on the right side of the block towards the front.

The Super C's had 354898R1 on the engine block. Some of the later Super A's used this same block.

Its a used engine and 60 pluss yrs old and you have no way of knowing what has been done so remove the head and measure only positive way to know whats there.

A Super C with oversize pistons will end up with 132.7 CID instead of 135. The C123 uses a crankshaft with a 4.0 stroke while the C135 has a stroke of 4.0625.

Most likely, depending on its age it will have C-123 in raised letters ahead of the engine serial number. If it is an older engine the engine serial number will start with FCM. As others have pointed out, there is no telling what has been done to it, machine shop wise, over the years.
