coil core for H4 magneto

I bought a nice H4 mag turned out to be missing the coil. I bought a new coil but am having trouble making or finding the iron core.

Anyone know where I can find the center iron core for the coil?

to the best of my knowledge, they are not being made anymore. your best bet is to buy a used one from a mag shop or salvage one from a junker mag.

Part # was 21314DX. Subs to #21314D at darned near $600.00 from FIAT.

Brillman had them. Its not a solid core, its laminated.

John, good to know about brillman. Yes, these are laminated, although I do wonder how a cast iron rod would work. Not a difficult task to turn one on the lathe.

robably not that well. Most transformers (which is what a magneto is) have laminated cores to keep current from being induced through the core. A solid core would probably bleed off some of the generated power, yielding a weaker spark.

Generator and starter armatures are laminated for the same reason.

The core I've had out didn't have the rivets showing. Did IH make some with counter sunk rivets?

I may be wrong, been a long time since Ive had to
work on a mag, but I think the whole thing is covered
with a thin piece of metal?

well, one thing for sure, whenever I come upon a junk mag with the coil inside, I cannibalize the parts, and for sure, keep the core (if it is salvageable).

I have a couple on the shelf that I keep for rebuilds. If I had more than a couple, I would certainly sell them, but I don't. Sorry about that.

hysteresis is the term used, if you have a solid core it will heat up more.

Naw, they're just riveted really tight, then ground smooth. You don't notice the laminations or rivets unless they get beat up.
