SM Rear Gasket Replaement?

Just wondering if the gasket between rear chassis housing and axle housing can be changed without removing transmission cover? I cringe in thinking about tearing my restored SM down to do this. Thought maybe could slit gasket at the top and slide in? Any experience or much appreciated.

No need to remove the cover. The hardest part is handling the wheel and axle housing. It can be done by having the wheel on a greased board. Replace two of the bolts with longer ones to act as guide pins. Support the center of the tractor. remove the rest of the bolts. slide the wheel out on the board as far as it will go. It will only be about an inch or so. You can use a gasket or if you clean up both surfaces so they are oil free you can used a bead of RTV silicone sealer and forget the gasket.
