What distributor do I have?

Last week the problem was my '41H wouldn't start after I rebuilt the head. (topic was entitled "'41H won't start").

I figured I had a bad coil, and so ordered one. I also decided to go electronic and ordered the mating electronic ignition kit.

Today, the stuff arrived. I installed the new coil and the tractor fired right up. I went to install the electronic ignition and ... wait - it doesn't fit.

First, the base plate that goes onto the distributor base physically doesn't fit. Next the magnetic pickup is significantly smaller in diameter and won't go onto the distributor shaft. (Distributor shaft is.5625 inches in diameter)

So, I thought I have a '41H, 6V system. Based on the pics, am I missing something?

That's a delco distributor.Same as most of the Allis Chalmers tractors wd45 and newer. I myself would stay with points.

It's an aftermarket Delco distributor conversion. Most likely it replaced the original IHC factory magneto.

Incidentally the same Delco distributor is also used on many Allis-Chalmers, M-M, Oliver, etc. tractors of the era.

Thanks -

I just came in from driving my H around the back 40. It seems to be running mighty fine.

I guess I'll go get a spare set of points and a condenser, just to be safe...

(quoted from post at 10:47:33 10/27/14) I have a dumb question. Are these points, condenser and rotor fairly available at an auto parts store?

Yes, but if you ask for points for a Delco on a Farmall, the parts guy will probably tell you it doesn't exist, because he can't find it in the computer. Instead, ask for points, condensor, rotor, etc. to fit an Allis-Chalmers D17.

I've also heard that the same points, etc, are used in the older Chevy in-line 6s, such as from the 50s.

They sure were, my stock is all in GM Delco foil boxes!!

Put a lot of them into GM stuff back in the 70's. Even owned some stuff that used them.
