Need help with H throttle linkage

Hi,

I need some help on fixing the throttle linkage on my H. The attached pictures show the current state, and I was hoping someone could provide a picture or two of what it should look like. It "works" now, but not very well, as it either binds or doesnt adjust properly.

Any suggestions on a good fix to tighten things up would be helpful. The pivot point where the governor control bellcrank meets the bracket on the head isnt very tight which has probably been a problem for a long time since the governor control rod has worn out the hole in the guide plate where the gauges mount..

the below pics are what it looks like now.

thanks in advance for any advice!

Wow, I might be wrong here, and do not hve a camera, and I didn't take off my hood, but I think you're missing some parts;
1. There's a spring in mine, keeps a equalizer bracket centered, where the throttle rod bolt runs thorough the Y-bracket. You don't have them.
2. I don't think there is supposed to be a nylon-lock-nut and a separate bolt and some extra nuts in there.
3. Note, the throttle rod is not a solid rod, it is a hollow tube on mine, [tragic tale], so yours might have been broken and repaired on yours. Might be shorter than original.

That's a real farmerized assembly. You should make a trip to a tractor junk yard and get the whole rod assembly from the pedestal to the bell crank.

Not sure if the link will get you the right place in the CaseIH online parts catalog but you are missing #21 and 2 #18 springs. It does not show the nuts. Assemble as follows
1.Take off all the nuts.
2.Slide one of the lips of #21 on the rod
3.Then one spring.
4.Next the part you have that goes into the bell crank on the engine slides over the threads of the rod.
5.Then the second spring.
6.Next a thread on a nut.
7.Then the front hole in the lip of #21
8 Last a nut.
10 The two nuts tighten to sandwich the front lip of #21 in the proper location. A manual would give you the proper method to adjust this.
Hopefully someone will post a pic of how it is supposed to look. My M is 500 miles away so I can"t get a pic. for you.

Yeah, it is a real "farmerized" setup isnt it, LOL :D

Thanks for all of the advice, I was able to see the link on the CaseIH parts site.

I'm going to a show today (hopefully if the rain will quit) and maybe can get a closer look at the linkage on some restored H's.

thanks again!

Hi,

Sorry to dredge up this topic, but I still need some help. One of the suggestions was to get the necessary parts from a tractor boneyard, but I dont have access to one around. I ended up calling CaseIH to check on availability, and the Governor Control Rod Equalizer (p/n 51353D) is no longer available. The springs (p/n: 51354DA) are available, but are expensive and a special order.

Unless someone has other better suggestions, it looks like I'll have to make my own. Does anyone have measurements for the springs (length and diameter), as well as the equalizer (length between tabs)?

After looking at the pictures in the parts manual, and doing some guesstimating, my rough measurements are as follows:

(Throttle shaft measures about 5/16" diameter.)
(Governor Control Rod Swivel / Pivot measures about 1/2")

With those measurements, I'm guessing the springs should be about 1" long and the overall equalizer to be about 2-1/2" long (inside to inside)?

As always, any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I'm sure you do have a tractor boneyard nearby but it is not well advertised.

However, I'd imagine Zachary Hoyt could help you out here. He was specializing in parting out H's for a while, and may still have what you need on hand. It's stuff that should be shippable.

Zach is a frequent poster here.

With some slight modifications, it could be made to work just fine with what is on there now. Looks like it could use a little straightening. For what it's worth, the original style linkage can be a real bear to adjust properly.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Regarding the local boneyards, I'm in Northwest Indiana - Lowell (Southern Lake County). If anyone knows of some around this area, let me know.

As for the original linkage being difficult to adjust, I can totally see how that would be. Mine is very sloppy as it is, the pivot is quite a bit larger than the shaft so it tends to bind. It's been 'farmerized' for this long, I may as well just rig it up as best as possible and go with it.

thanks,
