2400A or 454 PTO Issue

Hello,

I have a 2400A industrial (I know its pretty
close the same thing as an IH 454). We have a
PTO problem. The PTO spins, but when it comes
under load it just slips. The power steering,
3 pt, and brakes all seem to work just fine.

I know that it might be a Hydraulic PTO issue.
Are there other things I should check first
before digging into this to replace the PTO?

Its a gas engine, with syncroshift tranny, and
an independent PTO.

I am actually a teacher at a HS and this might
be a great learning opportunity for my advanced
mechanics boys who need a good project. Just
trying to wrap my mind around this one!

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff, simple things first, check for junk that has gotten down behind seat that is interfering with the PTO engagement lever. Next the PTO engagement lever actuates a hydraulic valve on top of MCV valve where hydraulic filter is mounted under the left foot rest.

Take your favorite penetrating oil and spray all the PTO lever mechanism parts including under the rubber boot on top of MCV valve.

If above doesn't fix the problem then possibility is PTO clutch pack, hydraulic pressure to PTO clutch pack. I don't believe the splines in the pressure plate are stripped as all the hydraulics would stop.

Thanks Jim, I pressure washed the area and checked it all over. The lever and valve are moving up and down easily.

Any other suggestions?

Jeff, if you have a shop manual, it describes a hydraulic pressure test for the PTO clutch pack.

One more test for worn splines on pressure plate, engage the PTO and if the tractor has remote hydraulic outlets, dead head the remote outlet and listen for relief valve buzzing, engine being lugged down and watch to see if PTO stops. If the relief valve stops buzzing and the PTO stops, the splines on the pressure plate that drive the PTO shaft could be worn out but still have enough grip to drive the hydraulic pump but not a PTO driven implement.

Thanks - No external hydro ports, but I am hoping to work with our local CaseIH dealership on the other test...
