I was wondering if you could turn the raised edge down on the cover with a lathe to get a tighter clearance on the brakes to tighten them back up again, everything is in good shape on mine but are adjusted pretty much to max,i am in the process of restoring it and wanna get everything working as it should, thanks george

Yes the housing should be machined. Clearance should be from .040 to .060". With the discs and expander laying inside the housing, place a straight edge across the case surface. A dime is about the right thickness. a little more a little less is OK. Jim

Not well as the balls run in a machined grooves. Bigger grooves would need to be machined or the bigger balls will ride on edges, not fitting the groove depth. Creating a shim and using flat head countersunk screws to hold the shim to the expander would be a way, much more complex than machining the housing. The wear involved is on all 4 surfaces of the fixed components. Jim

I can see how it could be done with a surface grinder, mill, or a lathe.

Lathe would be the most complicated way to do it. Probably a tie for mill and surface grinder as the simplest. IMHO a machine shop would most likely put it in the Bridgeport.

If all you have is a big lathe, throw it in the 4-jaw, indicate it in, and go to town!

Thank you all for the input, its greatly appreciated, my neighbor does all my machine work for me he will probably use Bridgeport but not certain I tell him what I need done and he does it for me. I just wanted to be certian I was on the right track got alot of work ahead of me restoring it, I have it all torn down now to fix the torque and figured now would be the time to work on all the issues then on getting it stripped to paint while its in pieces, thanks again.
