Radiator drain on an H

Hi,

Out of curiosity, do many of you who own H's (or other NF Farmalls) keep the radiator drain original (I think it was a winged cap, right?) or do you possibly put on a petcock or draincock? I only ask because it would seem to me that with the advent of the draincock, it is far less messy to drain the radiator since you can put on a hose and into a bucket than to open it up and let her dump.. especially on a NF..

If you have converted to a petcock or draincock, I'd be interested to hear what you did.

thanks in advance!

Yes they came with a winged cap, and even with the wide front end your going to make a mess! Unless you could have a piece, of clear thin walled fertilizer hose,or old garden hose that would slip over top of the drain pipe.

If you drain the block first, there won't be as much pressure on the radiator drain. Turn the front wheels for clearance. Keep that drain as short as possible as I have seen where the tire carried up something that broke it & lost the fluid.

You're exactly right. I installed an elbow, short nipple, and a drain valve, and I plugged the end of the valve so it wouldn't leak. Works perfectly, can drain qnd catch everything without a real mess.

You can put a petcock on no problem but what I have always done is be quick with a hose or the old kinked cardboard trick like on any drain plug that will slobber all over.
