muffler choice for M

I've had a straight pipe on my Farmall M
for a while. The place that I have moved
to is kind of residential and I don't know
how much they'd appreciate a Farmall M
with a straight running in the evening.
The thing is I'm getting ready to start
pulling it next season. I know I'll lose
a little power putting a muffler on, but
has anyone ever considered putting on a
performance muffler like a flowmaster?
Shouldn't be much of a power loss and
should quiet it down some.

I've seen plenty of tractors with old car mufflers stuffed on them to quiet them down. Usually the mufflers are recycled after they've fallen off the car they were originally installed on. I'd imagine a new muffler would work even better.

Preferably you'd want a muffler with the inlet and outlet centered. It just looks kinda goofy with them offset.

Another option: A "restoration quality" muffler is designed to original factory specs and will be quieter than a straight pipe.

The best mufflers were the ones made by Bermuda Ken, sounded sweet, your neighbors will love them.

The replacements are a straight thru so tell me how they can cause a HP loss you can get more HP from your M by doing other things than running a straight pipe

You must be using an adapter because a 706 muffler right out of box won't fit a M. The M is 2 3/8" inlet id. and 706 is 2 15/16" inlet id.

I have automotive 'CherryBomb' mufflers on a few of my Farmalls.
look good, cheap, sound good, much better built than current tractor mufflers, USA made, and they are....red :)

I'd go with an original muffler, the neighbor's M always had a very soft mellow sound even when it was working hard. You might also gain a little low end torque with it compared to a straight pipe. I had Flowmaster mufflers on a '87 Firebird, they were not very quiet at all, just there to make it legal. If you are really concerned about power, would a 450 or 400 muffler have less restriction and still fit on your M? It probably depends on how heavily modified the engine is your M (cam, stroke, bigger valves, etc).

If your going to be pull it you might want to check out ( Rod Shop.com). Take a look at what they have to offer . Their items are made of stainless steel and not priced to bad for stainless steel.

That is the size of a 706 gas. I have a 706 gas and the muffler won't fit a M or 450. You would have to put an adapter on M or 450 to get muffler inlet down small enough to fit the M or 450 . The 806 and 706 gas take the same muffler.

I did call the Case IHC dealer, he said the 656, 706, and 806 gas all take the same muffler , but i got buyers guides that show pictures of a 656 with a stubby little M muffler, obviously there's been some changes, all i know i get them from Stanley muffler Co now, there called a IHC 13
