1086 batteries

I had to replace one of the batteries in my 1086 last week
it was a small car battery and as the nights get a little cooler the tractor would not crank
my question is the other battery is a marine grade battery
it is a big one and looks pretty new (I have only had the tractor since Feb.)
Is it ok to use the marine battery with the new battery as long as the marine battery is good
it cranks great now but I dont want to ruin that new battery
Thanks

If it is a Marine crank battery and not a trolling motor deep cycle battery it will work. The issue is battery equality. A powerful battery must flow its energy through the connections of a lesser battery and cause real issues and possible explosions. I like equal batteries of similar age. On small, one big is a risk. I always grit my teeth and replace both batteries when one goes bad. When one gives up the ghost the other isn't far behind. I am not in a good mood when I have to drag a battery charger through the snow to boost a tractor that needs to be dependable. Jim

Jim: A battery is like a chain that will pull only as much as its weakest link. A battery will only put out as much as its smallest or weakest cell. Its not hard on the big new battery but it may be an overload on the older, weaker one.

The 86 series tractors use two 12 volt batteries in parallel rather than a pair of six volt batteries connected in series. Batteries in parallel are much better at cooping with mismatched capacities than a series type system. It is better to keep them matched but you may get good service from the pair you have. Differences in charging rates may cause some problems but as others have posted, as long as the one is a marine starting battery and not a deep cycle trolling motor battery you should be able to use them.

My experiences with replacing just one in a 12V parallel setup is not good.

Either replace both with a matching pair or one big battery.

Replace both batteries with good high cranking amp
batteries. Not some cheap ones from tractor supply
or some discount store. When you put them in make
SURE connections are CLEAN and cables are good. Your
srarting problems will be reduced. Whatis a couple
extra dollars over a couple of years when you dont
have to fight to get it started

Yup, and in 6 months the marine battery will go bad, and 6 months later the new Napa battery will go bad, then in 6 more months the battery you replaced the marine battery with will go bad, then 6 more months the battery you replaced the Napa battery will go bad... Have fun!

For the longest battery life and lowest maintenance, replace both batteries with a matched pair.

If you really need to find a place to use the marine battery... used boats sell at their cheapest prices this time of year.

we replaced both batteries in our 1086 they were 750 cca each,in less than a year went to it wouldn't start found out one had a bad cell, on the spur of the moment we put a group 31 battery 1200 cca in the right box believe it or not it fit the box, it was about 40 degrees that day it fired right up,it's still cranking it 10 months latter with that one battery, going to put another on the left for this winter
