M hand crank removal

I want to get the hand crank apparatus off my M. Got the ratchet freed up so it turns freely. Looks like there is a pin that can be driven out to separate the ratchet from the hand crank rod. There is a collar around the ratchet that partially covers the pin. I can't get that collar to budge. Is it just rusted tight or is there something I am missing to complete this job. Thanks

None of those pieces will come out until you remove the entire front bolster from the tractor, unless you don't care about ever putting it back together, and then you can use a torch.

Yea I was hoping to avoid that but I guess I can't. So here's another question (I've never pulled the front end off a tractor). Can I block the tractor with railroad ties under the clutch housing (in front of belly pump) and then unbolt the bolster and front axle/wheels and roll it off safely as a unit using an engine hoist? The tractor has a 460 wide front on it. Looks like a fairly simple procedure but I guess the bolster/axle weighs many hundreds of pounds. I would use a loader but the loader is on the M.

Yes - you can safely support the front end of the tractor at the clutch housing. Just be sure to securely chock the rear tires so it cannot move while jacking, etc.

The bolster will slide out easily after disconnecting the radiator hoses, removing the steering shaft then removing the bolts thru the side rails. Loosening each of the motor mount bolts a couple turns can be helpful.

Be aware the bolster assembly is VERY heavy and top heavy. For safety use a loader, engine hoist or similar to handle it.

Before trying to remove the frame rail bolts use a heavy hammer and hit the head of the bolts solid several times, this will help from wringing those bolts off

Another question: after I get the tractor supported at the clutch housing do I want any weight off the front axle for removing the bolster/axle. In other words should the front wheels be on the ground or off the ground when I hookup the engine hoist to the upper bolster. Probably a really dumb question but I've not done this before and don't want to make a mistake.

You would want the front tires off the ground, but just barely. The front bolster assembly is a rather awkward piece and not balanced very well. Please be careful as it seems to have a mind of its own. We all had our first time.

I would lift the tractor until the weight was off the front axle and then support the axle and remove it from the bolster. Lift the tractor a bit more and block it in that position. That will keep you from having to handle the axle assembly. You will be able to easily handle the bolster with an engine hoist without the front axle attached.
