Main fuel adjustment screw. Farmall 300

I am having some issues with my farmall 300. Right now I need full choke to even keep it running. I did some searches and see that I should pull the fuel bowl off and clean it out and blow out the fuel jet. Also, check for good fuel flow.

Should my sediment bowl have a screen? Mine does not. I am getting rust particles in my bowl still. Any suggestions on cleaning out the fuel tank without removing it?? I plan on doing that this winter but I need this tractor now.

Another thing, The book says to turn out main fuel adjustment screw 5 turns. I don't think my MFAS will even stay in that far out. Also it is very very loose, so loose that just in normal operation it is constantly changing adjustment. I got a new lead packing to replace any tips or pointers as far as that goes?

Thanks in advance. Also posted on tractor talk.

do you have good fuel flow? my C is forever, clogging at the shut-off. your settling bowl is doing its job, trapping the rust.

Yes you need a screen in the sedimint bowl you can get them at NAPA take the glass bowl along to get a new rubber seal and screen.

Try tightening ( be gentle) the packing nut. By tightening I mean just to snug it up enough to where the adjustment screw is hard to turn by hand.

You may have rust collected in the passageways of the carb as well. Have you checked the screen on your carb? It may be gunked up as well.

You need to understand just HOW a sediment bowl works. The screen sets at the top of the bowl. If the screen is original, or a genuine replacement, it will be made of nylon. Not brass. The fuel comes out of the tank, into the sediment bowl, and THEN it has to pass through the screen and then into the fuel line. IF there is rust in the fuel tank, that rust WILL go into the sediment bowl where it will settle out of the gas and collect in the sediment bowl. THAT is what a sediment bowl DOES. The screen at the top of the bowl will catch whatever rust did not have time to settle, thus allowing only clean fuel to enter the fuel line.
