Just aquired Farmall 460 and have questions.

Tractor runs well. We drove it home on the road, about 21 miles. Everythiing went well until almost home and I was going down hill and using the brakes when it developed a clunk in the rear case. The brakes were really bad, but we continued on and parked it. It continued to run smoothly.

It sat for a week until I could get to it. I drove it carefully around the yard and no clunk. Ah ha, hopefully just the brakes.

This weekend pulled the bakes apart and pulled the bull pinion shaft and bearings. Brake houseings severly plugged with dirt. The left side was dry and looks to be in pretty good shape. The right side was an oil soaked mess and packed with dirt. One of the springs holding the brake actuater was broken and the surfaces were severly pitted. OK, all new brakes for the right side and new disks for the left.

Now the surprise, the pinion bull gears were badly chipped. The left side, not so much and the right side real bad. I jacked up the back end and completely inspected the bull gears and they appear to be smooth and clean with no defects. The oil was quite milky in appearance and needs to be changed.

How many drains and filters are there? I want to purge the system of as much of this crap oil as I can. The tractor has a No. 52 end loader mounted and I know this cruddy oil is all through it. Are there any special additives that I should put in the fresh oil? The tractor has a functioning TA, fast hitch, and PTO.

Thanks ahead of this for your suggestions and help.

There are the two plugs and you can pull the pto housing to access a bit more. I've not seen any sure fire recommendations short of making frequent fluid changes for a while. Might be worth getting 15 gallons of the TSC stuff and run it for a bit and then replace it with Hytrans.

We've used farmstore stuff for years, but the 560 seems more sensitive to fluid than the 706 or 806 so I'm going to try Hytrans.

Thanks, I had not thought about using cheaper hydraulic oil to help purge the system. Good idea as long as the TA will handle it. We won't be doing any heavy draft work with it though.

Stearing is awfully loose. I checked the shafts and u-joints. It appears to be in the stearing gear. I will have to do research to see if that can be tightened up.

Three plugs to drain and if you feel really ambitious, take that T shaped cover off bottom of TA housing. It usually collects a lot of sludge. You can unhook the power steering return line and run it into a bucket while turn steering wheel to eliminate some more gunky oil. If double action cylinder on loader and or bucket I take return hose off with cyl fully collapsed and purge that oil also. Hitch cyl also if fast hitch. This will help get more crud out, but you will still have some. Far as bull pinions, lot of them get switched side to side for least amount of wear on driving side. If you do swap gears make sure gears are same angle of teeth as that is what was changed on the gears when updating packages were installed. A few tractors did not get the updates but the ones that did would still wear out those gears if used hard over time. Does it have flat roller bearings on bull pinions and tapered roller bearings on the differential. The flat rollers were not in original change but added later during another bearing upgrade package or just a repair.

Pete, the pinion bull bearings are caged ball bearings and look to be OK. I purchased a set of bull pinion shafts from E-Bay that are roller bearings. I think I just need to put my old bearing onto the new shafts. I hope that is the case.

Where is the third at? I know of the two on the sides. I'll have to look at the manual again, but don't recall the third. I'm going to try and purge the fluid on the 560 myself this winter.

If you heard a clunk when using the brakes, that is the sound of the brake actuator going "over center" and reaching the end of its travel.

An update on my 460. Starting to put the brakes back together. I installed good used pinion bull gears, bearing were OK. This tractor will never see heavy draft work.

The incredibly expensive brake actuator spring are a challenge to install. Got one actuator assembled and am having a devil of a time with the second. Maybe my hands just aren't that strong any more.

Putting in a new used brake and clutch cross shaft and new used clutch pedal. The old one looked like it laid an egg it was so out of round.

So far all of the used parts I have purchased off E-Bay have been serviceable, and I am pretty good with that. My step daughter and infant granddaughter have been helping. I can't wait to drive it and be able to stop.

Next step will be to try and reduce the considerable slack in the steering. It has power steering and a wide front.
